Ensign Peak

For Family Home Evening last night Matt had the great idea of hiking up Ensign Peak and talking to the kids about the pioneers. I was so excited. So I took it a little further and found Madi a bonnet and Max his cowboy hat. I found a couple of old pioneer stories about little kids and we would stop along the trail and read them. Madi was so excited to learn about the pioneers I swear she asked 100 questions, and she did so good on the hike. The whole way up she did not complain once she just kept saying that she was going to walk the whole way like the pioneer girls. I thought for sure that half way up I would be carrying her and she made it all on her own. ( I think I was the one who wanted to be carried!!) When we made it to the top we had our dinner there and then read another story that my mom used to read to me when I was a little girl called Betsy Buttons. My mom gave me this old doll and and we let Madi hold it while I read the story. It was such a fun relaxing night. Good idea Babe!!

A Little info about Ensign Peak:

Ensign Peak is a hill on the northern edge of the Salt Lake Valley. On July 26, 1847, two days after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young and seven other pioneer leaders climbed the hill to survey the valley. From its summit they laid out in their minds the city they intended to build.
The men fastened a yellow bandanna to a cane and waved it from the mountain peak. Brigham Young named the spot Ensign Peak. The pioneers had carried two American flags with them across the plains. Within a short time a flagpole was erected and one of those flags was flown from the peak.
